Richard’s Year of Movies — Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion

Hannah wasn’t in until late today and felt like watching a movie, so I introduced her to the magic that is Netflix Watch Instantly on Xbox Live. We settled on something I hadn’t seen probably since it came out, and something she’d never seen — Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion. Or, as she summed it up as the movie started, “Ah, the 90s.”
It’s a film that definitely wears its time period on its sleeve, both the time in which it was made and the 80s to which it flashes back. I remember now what I liked about this film — I like every damn 80s song on the soundtrack, and Romy and Michele’s class year is pretty much mine. But I’d forgotten how damn cute Mira Sorvino is in this. She’s got this perfect “just smart enough to get by” tone to her performance, and she plays off Lisa Kudrow really well. It’s not an Oscar turn, but it’s a great comedic performance. Janeane Garofalo is great in this too, and you’ve got “Holy crap, it’s them!” appearances by Alan Cumming and Camryn Manheim.
And I added about two dozen films to my Instant Watch queue. Some stuff I haven’t seen in a while, some stuff I’ve never seen that looks good, and some stuff that I’ve never seen that looks horribly bad but has to be seen to be believed. I mean, how can you not at least take a look at a film called Nympho Barbarian in Dinosaur Hell?
